[Developers] lib/sbin and lib/make patches, revised

Hi,

these look broadly ok, although I'd like the variable intrfc to have a 
more meaningful name, and also if possible only one return point per 
subroutine as per the normal coding guidelines.

Once you have sorted those out, please split into one patch per bug, where 
possible, and commit.
