They are as necessary as e.g. CCTK_CompileTime; they provide information 
about the build and the simulation.  This information is very handy in 
the screen output.

They could certainly go into a thorn, but so could then 
CCTK_CompileTime.  If the information should be printed near the 
beginning of the screen output, then they have to be in the flesh.
