I just tried it myself.  AEIThorns is available for anonymous checkout:

 	cvs -d :pserver:cvs_anon at cvs.aei.mpg.de/numrelcvs login

 	<password is 'anon'>

 	cvs -d :pserver:cvs_anon at cvs.aei.mpg.de/numrelcvs co AEIThorns

You didn't inform us of what commands you gave, so I can only guess
that you were trying to do a checkout as some user other than cvs_anon.

If you have any further problems with the AEI CVS server, please write
to
 	cvs_admin at aei.mpg.de
